Necessity of Water Hygiene Maintenance in India. India is an overpopulated country that needs to develop sustainable maintenance of natural resources. Especially when it comes to water hygiene, the country is facing various issues such as water scarcity, lack of fresh drinking water, waterborne diseases, and many other problems. The governments and other sectors are involved in various programs and projects for water hygiene maintenance in the country.

Water Hygiene Condition and Reasons In India

Safe water supply is crucial for a healthy economy; therefore, it should be prioritized in the country. Due to the rising water problems, the government has initiated many programs. The projects are still ongoing to reach their goal and help the country to fight against the issues.

According to the estimated report of UNICEF, waterborne diseases have become an economic burden of USD 600 million per year in India. The reasons behind this condition are natural disasters such as drought and flood.

The UNICEF report also states that less than 50% of India's population can access safe drinking water. The other half is still dealing with unhygienic water practices. Water bodies face chemical contamination of fluoride and arsenic in 1.96 million dwellings.

Two-thirds of India's districts are affected by water depletion. It also lacks planning for water safety. Therefore, it has now become a major concern for the government. Groundwater depletion is the country's major challenge, propelling faster. Groundwater has access to over 30 million, supplying about 85% of drinking water to rural areas and 48% in urban areas. In India, about 163 million people don't get access to safe water. Around 210 million lack improved sanitation.

Lack of awareness in rural areas and water hygiene maintenance practices leads to such results. The government has developed initiatives to overcome these issues.  Sewage control and management are strongly initiated in every state. The water treatment systems are facilitated to treat the harmful and unhygienic water before reaching the water bodies.

Why Water Hygiene and Sanitation Important?

Water consists of essential minerals and nutrients required the body. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the benefits of drinking water. Water sanitation will play a magnificent role in supplying pure drinking water to the public. The awareness of water treatment systems is needed to spread all over the country to maintain hygiene.

  • Reduces Risk Of Diseases

According to the UN, 1/5th of child deaths worldwide are due to severe diarrhoea occur in India. Water sanitation will solve these health problems in India. The three main components, Water, Hygiene, and Sanitation, can reduce illnesses like ascariasis, cholera, diarrhoea, scabies, etc.

Bacterial and viral diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis are life-threatening conditions which are usually caused due to lack of pure water. The water gets contaminated due to many unhealthy practices and unhygienic practices. People of India should get aware of these diseases and adopt healthy practices.

Industrial sewage, which contains harmful chemicals, agricultural wastes, and city sewage, are major reasons behind the water bodies' contaminations. When the right treatment procedures are implemented to treat the contaminated water, it will eliminate the risk of these diseases.

  • Get Rid of Toxins

The water bodies usually get contaminated with harmful toxins. The large industrial sectors like chemical industries, factories, and other manufacturing units deliver tonnes of liquid waste into the water bodies. The wastes contain harmful metallic elements, toxins, and chemicals. When proper treatment is provided to the contaminated water, the consumption can lead to chronic diseases like cancer. Therefore, the water treatment systems should be effective enough to remove all the toxins.

  • Enhances The Agriculture Yield

Hygiene water will be an ingredient for higher crop production. The water used in the irrigation process should not be contaminated with effluents, chemicals, and other substances or it can harm the crops. Microbes will infect the yield when contaminated water is supplied to the crop.

Proper Sanitation and water hygiene are not only good for the human body but also improve environmental conditions. Water pollution will be reduced at a good rate, and people will learn about sustainable usage of natural resources. Therefore, it will further reduce the water crisis issues in the country.
