UNICEF claims up to 1.1mn Afghan children under 5 are set to suffer from severe malnutrition this year, nearly double the figure from 2018, with 28,000 hospitalized in March alone.

Afghanistan is not only struggling economically (half the entire 38mn population were in poverty at the end of 2021, with 97% expected by mid-2022), it is also experiencing its worst drought in decades.

UN aid agencies’ emergency food program has reached 38% of the population since the Taliban takeover, but that could drop to 8% within 6 months as only $601mn of the $4.4bn aid required has been delivered.
