NMA loses member to COVID-19, others down with virus

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Cross River State branch has lost a member to COVID-19 while nine others are seriously sick.

The Chairman of the Association (NMA), Dr. Agam E. Ayuk while disclosing this to DAILY POST on Thursday via phone regretted the death of his member saying that the other nine members are seriously sick.

“Currently we have nine (9) members who are infected with COVID-19. We lost a member in Ogoja, Rev Sister (Dt) Kate Okpa. COVID-19 is not a child’s play, it is something that is serious.

“We will not keep quiet and allow things to go the way the state government wants and continue to deceive the people. All we are saying and doing are in the open but as an organization, we can’t keep quiet and see evil continue.”

Dr Ayuk further disclosed that the challenge the Association had face was that the positive cases are under-reported even though the National Response Team are already on ground to see how they can resolve some of these issues.

“The Team had been around for almost two weeks now but the challenge we have in the state is that positive cases of COVID-19 are under-reported, that is why we have put pressure on UCTH. The reports you see are from NCDC or UCTH platforms

“We thank God that NCDC are listening to us hence the State has two testing centres for COVID-19 and we are happy with the response we are gotten. Let the government of Cross River State listen to us and do their own part.

“Let the government let us know what they are doing, currently we have patients that are stranded at our isolation centre that has five bed spaces filled. The state government is not doing anything about expanding the isolating centre.

“The one at Adiabo is still closed and not functioning, let government do what is right for the benefit of the people, that is their responsibility and what we can do as an association, we will do and help them. Our members are willing to help but we can’t keep quiet and allow people to die,” the Chairman said

About the controversial video about the treatment of COVID-19, Dr Ayuk said “COVID-19 is a novel disease and people are trying all sort of treatment. What works for one person may not work for the other, nobody has one formula that works for everybody. Every drug should be taken with caution knowing full well that everybody is peculiar.”
